What Happens with Specialised Cargo?
Hazardous Cargo
There are many different types of hazardous cargo, e.g. inflammable gas or liquid, corrosive liquids, solids and poisons, and these have to be segregated both when they are on the terminal and on the ship.
At DP World Southampton special rows are allocated for hazardous goods.
The hazardous goods are identified by labels, which identify their classification, e.g. explosives are class 1 or poisons are class 6.
These numbers are identified in the terminal’s computer system so that when the container arrives the computer knows which row to put them in.
Refrigerated Containers
DP World Southampton has 550 dedicated points at which a refrigerated container can be plugged into.
The dedicated points allow the refrigerated container engineers to access the containers more easily and safely. The engineers are checking that the refrigeration unit on the container is maintaining the correct temperature.
The Port Health Authority will examine samples from containers with food products to ensure that they are fit to eat before allowing them into the country.
