Landside Services
DP World Southampton continues to strive to meet the ever-changing demands from landside logistics.
Road
In response to increasing multi-modal demands, in June 2005, DP World Southampton developed its own unique Vehicle Booking System (VBS), the first of its kind in Europe, which enables the hauliers to pre-book the container for delivery and/or collection once clearance has been received from HMRC; the system enables DP World Southampton to deliver the service levels required better than ever before.
The terminal handles, on average, 2,000 lorries each day with consistent turnaround times of less than 30 minutes.
Rail
Approximately 27% of containers arrive and leave the terminal via one of the three rail terminals which serve Southampton. Between the two Freightliner operated terminals and the EWS terminal, 25 trains a day service the port daily.
In October 2007, the Department for Transport (DfT) awarded £43 million of Transport Innovation Funding (TIF) towards the gauge clearance work needed on the rail infrastructure out of Southampton and up to the West Coast Mainline. The upgrade will allow 9'6" containers (hi-cube) to be moved on standard wagons.
