TV show provides rare glimpse of Southampton’s container terminal

09 August 2016

A new documentary series goes behind the scenes at Southampton’s container terminal, following the transportation of some of its containers, carrying everything from super yachts to sweet potatoes.

DP World Southampton will appear in the new TV series called MegaShippers, which is due to be broadcast tonight (Tuesday 9th August) at 9pm on Discovery Quest.

The show by Back2Back productions gives exclusive access to the container port which is otherwise inaccessible to ensure the safety of DP World Southampton employees and for the security of the cargo. It features intimate footage of staff explaining their jobs loading and discharging boxes from the largest ships in the world.

Nick Loader, Chief Executive Officer at DP World Southampton, said:

“This is a rare opportunity for people to see inside the complex workings of a container terminal. Our 570 skilled workers, many of whom have been at DP World Southampton for most of their life, work in a safety critical environment operating heavy-duty machinery. In this documentary you will get the chance to see inside a straddle carrier and crane cab and meet the terminal operators themselves to find out what it takes to move over a million containers on and off the thousand cargo ships which call at Southampton container port each year.”
